A few weeks ago, I spoke with my karate teacher about transitions. This related specifically to kata (forms in karate) but it made me think about how it directly links to life, work and achieving milestones and how the ‘how you get there’ matters often a lot more than the actual achievement.
In karate you can see a textbook stance, but what preceded it and how the karateka got there is far more important.
In respect to work, we can often be too focused and driven to achieve a particular milestone that attention is taken away from the journey and the actual steps that enable us to get there. There can be too much focus on getting to point ‘B’ and achieving it that there is almost no space to pause alongside the road and also enjoy the journey. However, it is this journey that shapes us and allows us to grow personally and professionally.
The learning you get doesn’t happen in the moment when you actually achieve the big thing (e.g. submitting an important journal article, completing fieldwork or analysis, submitting the PhD, passing the viva or getting a permanent academic job) but it happens gradually as a result of many experiences, ups and downs, dealing with challenges, overcoming problems and looking for solutions.
Be aware of your ‘transitions’ and how they have shaped you and celebrate them. Become more conscious as that will connect you more with the present moment which comes with the opportunity to celebrate the smaller steps.
What transitions have mattered to you most recently? If you have a specific goal on your mind and you would like support with getting there let me know.
