Importance of completion

Completing a task brings us satisfaction. Being able to see something finished has the power to bring fulfilment and also motivation into the next steps.

As this year comes slowly to an end the topic of completion somehow comes up naturally. We can find completion in many things around us, and it is important to experience it. When I work with researchers, I encourage them to break their day down into smaller blocks with clarity over what they want to achieve during each of them. This is to enable them to experience completion on a smaller scale – through their working style, block work and clear tasks. The goal is to step away from too much focus on reaching the big goal (e.g. PhD, other research project or published article) but rather to break it down into smaller milestones that feel achievable.

Often, we can focus too much on the destination. But it is about enjoying the smaller things on the journey. The actual process. Completing smaller tasks can help with bringing more joy but also presence to our work. These milestones open space for celebrating the progress along the path and that has a huge importance for keeping things in perspective and being aware.

The feeling of seeing something through from the start until the end is very powerful. It motivates because it gives us a full experience of something. However, when there are too many projects, tasks, interests and we are not able to dedicate time to any of them properly it doesn’t allow the experience that something has been completed.

From time to time pause and be with yourself. Is completion present in your life? If not, there is always an opportunity to change and create space for it.
